Child Support — Assessment Framework
Unlike some jurisdictions, Israel has no fixed-percentage formula for child support. The court conducts a needs-and-means analysis: assessing what the child reasonably requires each month, then apportioning that cost between the parents based on their incomes. Courts regularly review documented household expenses, school fees, medical costs, and activity costs.
For children under 15, religious law (halacha) places the primary obligation on the father — even when custody is with the mother and even if the mother earns more. For children 15 and over, the obligation is shared proportionally. This two-tier structure means early legal advice on your specific situation is important.
